As an important part of the 2020 (21st) Hainan Island Carnival, a Hainan Opera performance will be held on Haikou’s Historic Qilou Cultural Streets from 10 - 11 a.m. on Dec 16. The Qilou Streets are one of the most popular architectural landscapes in Haikou, and feature Southeast Asian style “arcade” or “Qilou” buildings, with a distinctive overhanging second story.

Hainan Opera, known as “Qiongju” in Chinese, is the folk opera of South China’s Hainan Province, where it has been performed for over 300 years. The beauty of Hainan Opera, known as the spiritual “home” of the people of Hainan, lies in the singing, costumes, stage settings, lighting, and music. Traditionally, Hainan Opera is regarded as a favorite of the older generation of locals, although in recent years it has engaged more and more younger fans with the support and protection of the government.

Now, Hainan Opera has also been tasked with the mission of promoting the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, serving as an emotional connection between Hainan and the people of the world, and attracting them to invest in Hainan and start their own businesses here by taking advantage of the preferential policies of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
